I’d like to preface this review with the fact that 1. I am currently sitting cross legged on this very chair, and 2. the Couch Chasers owns a total of three IKEA Strandmons. It should be no surprise that this will be a glowing review.
Let’s start with the obvious: style. This mid-century modern armchair has been brought back from IKEA’s 1950s catalogue. It comes in many colors and upholstery – even (for a little extra cost) a velvety fabric option. Best of all, it’s affordable, which usually costs more than double IKEA’s price tag.
With a firm seat cushion and a lightly curved high back, the Strandmon wingback is supportive enough to sit in for hours. The seat size is perfect for curling up in, and I can lean my head on the wing for a quick nap (not as napable as a couch though). It basically feels like a cocoon.
Fun fact: wing-backs in 1600s England were designed to prevent drafts and trap heat from the fireplace. And who’s to say the Strandmon can’t do the same?
While Strandmon gets a solid A in my book, it’s not flawless. Most of its fabric covers are non-removable. My Nordvalla dark grey are stain-resistant, but my guess is that the velvety upholstery would require extra TLC.
The biggest downside is its height. At 5’6″ my feet barely touch the ground flat. But it’s an easy DIY fix; just saw down the legs or get a matching footstool.
